Here are some of my reactions to barely beating the Browns in 16:
- I was definitely underwhelmed by Sunday's performance. However, I have had some time to cool down and have read the theories that Buffalo was not playing 100%. The more I think about this, I am starting to wonder if there is some truth to it. It really did look like both our offense and defense was just moving in slow motion at times. For our defense, there were so many missed tackles or (in my mind) weak tackles. There was also just some bad play reading by the defense. They allowed 317 yards total but did limit the Browns to 2 touchdowns. Also, some of our veteran defensive players had big games. Again, this week, Matt Milano was all over the field and had 9 tackles with 2 QB hits and 1 tackle for a loss. Jordan Poyer led the team with 11 tackles and had an interception in the 1st quarter after the ball was tipped. Greg Rousseau had 3 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Then, in the 3rd quarter, DaQuan Jones had the second interception of the game after Sanders was pressured by Joey Bosa. So, overall, not the worst performance by our defense. But like I already said, underwhelming. I still think they need to tighten up on the run game, but I do think this week they were trying to minimize injuries. Hopefully they can contain Barkley next week.
- While Josh Allen had a quiet game, James Cook certainly did not. Cook had 134 yards total with 2 touchdowns. We have only lost 1 game when Cook has over 100 yards. He now is leading the league in rushing yards with 1,532 yards this season. He has been averaging 102 yards per game with 12 touchdowns. He is currently only 43 yards ahead of Jonathan Taylor. Joe Brady, please keep Cook cooking so he can end the season with the record! I was getting frustrated with play calling during the game because it just seemed so conservative. However, just like I said above, I am really thinking a lot of this was because they wanted to prevent injuries. Also, I don't think anyone wanted Myles Garrett to get the sack record against Allen. Ultimately, an ugly win is better than a loss. The dropped touchdown by Dawson Knox was frustrating, and Dalton Kincaid has not been utilized much lately. It makes it wonder if he isn't 100% yet. I am hoping he will stay healthy for playoffs. Our offense just seems to have more life when he is healthy. Speaking of being healthy, hopefully Allen's foot injury is nothing to be concerned about. I was also confused by the choice to not start Gabe Davis. Does this mean he has an injury that we haven't heard about yet? I sure hope not! I am also hoping Joe Brady has some better play calling planned for next week and the playoffs.
- Unfortunately, the Ravens were unable to beat New England. So, our chances of winning the East are extremely slim. The good news is, the 49ers were able to beat the Colts. So, we have officially clinched a playoff spot for the 7th season in a row! Hopefully we continue to win and can end up as the 5th seed; but that will depend on how other teams perform. So, for now, we just have to keep waiting and see how the final two weeks of regular season play out. I am hoping the last 2 games of the season will be slightly less stressful now that we have a playoff spot. However, knowing myself, I will still probably be stressed the whole time!
I will be back in Texas, and unfortunately working for our week 17 match up against the Eagles. However, I can't complain since I was able to be off this entire week. Hopefully I will be able to watch some of the game if labor and delivery isn't too busy. But, more importantly, hopefully Buffalo's win streak continues!
As always, and in the words of our MVP, be good, do good, God bless, and go Bills!
